BACKGROUND

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with a life expectancy of 44 years and unemployment of 70%. Most recently, Haiti has been very negatively affected by the high cost of grain, especially rice, as their own production was undermined by cheap imports and is now non-existent. There have been riots and demonstrations, and more Haitians than ever are growing hungry.

THE PROJECT

The OIH board of directors is proudly introducing a new project called Sharon’s Farm. This initiative is kicked off at the beginning of 2013 with the intention in helping poor families in Bombardopolis, Haiti to financially stand on their own.
Inspired by Sharon, a devoted and committed partner of OIH, this program is created to improve the health conditions and quality of life of rural Haitians. It will foster entrepreneurs and help create small businesses for poor families in Bombardopolis. Sharon’s Farm idea has a biblical concept based on the parable of the talents (Matthew 25:14-30). The goal is to provide Haitians with valuable skills, as well as a source of food and income for their children.

LIVESTOCK

Livestock are domesticated animals raised for food, fiber, and labor. Sharon’s Farm will utilize livestock to promote and produce protein, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D to nourish a small family, and to sell at the market. We will donate animals to families to feed themselves and to start a small business either by selling eggs, fresh meat or milk to the community.

The core concept of the program is simple: grow to survive and Haitians need to stand on their own. It is committed to build an infra structure for raising animals, such as cows, goats, and sheep, that will provide a stable source of food, and most importantly, vital protein, which is lacking in most of the people’s diet. Each animal will be bred, bartered, or used as a source of animal protein for people on low-nutritional diets.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Sharon’s Farm program was established to tackle the poverty prevalent in rural communities in Haiti by equipping families to be more independent and self-sufficient, and most of all providing them a crucial sense of dignity for a better Haiti.

AGRONOMY

In addition to providing livestock, the program will also provide vegetable and fruit seeds to families. This will allow them to grow their own food that will meet their nutritional requirements in their diet, and provide food on the table long-term.
